Finally Airing! Today on Martha...
Today I demonstrated how I made my Pico Halloween headpiece with Martha on her show. Although it was a more complex craft, we still had a lot fun making it. Pico was there with her pirate ship and I gifted to Martha, a Coral Ann headpiece, so she joined us too.
The mask/headpiece was obviously inspired by Pico, my parrotlet, and my obsession with her. When I thought about what I was going to dress as for Halloween this season, I thought maybe I should be a pirate—ahoy matey!—since people tell me I look like one with Pico is on my shoulder. A pirate costume seemed too, I don't know, generic, so I decided to make Pico the pirate and I would be her, the parrot! Watch the video from the show and learn how to make the headpiece here. Thanks Martha and the Martha Stewart Show for having me on and Nick D'Emilio for the show photos.
I cannot believe that you showed how to make this awesome headpiece on Martha today. My son is 4 and he wants to be a pirate for halloween, well he wants his sister to be his parrot, lol. I've been wracking my brain on a solution for her headpiece. I just so happened to have the show on and walked by the TV and flipped out. I'm soooo excited! Going to the craft store today to get started! I can't seem to find the feather template though, is it on the website? Also how long should I expect this to take including dry time. Obviously I'm short on time. Thanks for your awesome demonstration. Using boa feathers to make the body incase you were wondering. Thanks
ReplyDeleteOh I am so happy you are going to make it! Microwaving the rigid wrap will definitely help speed things up and it wouldn't hurt to put a fan on it as well in between layers. the paper clay does need the dry time though. if you have all your supplies together, you can multitask and you should totally get it done before Halloween. Our web people are linking the feather template as we speak! thanks so much for the comment!!
ReplyDeleteI was blown away by these headpieces. They would also be great for Jimmy Buffett fans, i.e., "Parrotheads". Maybe you should send him one of his own.
ReplyDeleteWas it hard to make the very curved beak for Martha's headpiece?
Bravo a Billion times for the incredible talent you possess and your decision to honor Pico and all Parrotlets!!!!! My mom was gifted a parrotlet we named Baby. She thought he was nothing but a pain but I love him more than words could ever express. I'm having a hard time to find out good ideas about how to feed him the healthiest food. Do you have 'special' things you've found out about that you wouldn't mind sharing with me? Thank you so much in advance for the help if you can & God Bless. kathy@swanindustries.com
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome segment. Thanks for using paperclay - I'd never quite got my head around how to use it. Pico was super cool as always - such a media star!
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful piece. My daughter wants to be a parrot for this Halloween and I stumbled across this on the Martha Stewart website. Can you please tell me how you made the curved beak on Martha's headpiece? I've been having some trouble shaping the foil. Thanks so much! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteI used a lot of foil packed together to create the shape of the beak. I can't explain it better than just really sculpting the foil... you can try using paper and tape to create the shape and than cover it with foil or plastic wrap so the rigid wrap doesn't stick to it. It helps to look at pictures of parrots from all different angles, when forming it as well. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the help! I was excited to find your head piece since I had already planned to make the dress/wings from organza. I have many pictures of red macaw up for reference. My daughter is always challenging me, she was a jelly fish a couple of years ago!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous. PLEASE send me pictures!!!
