diy leather camera case

A couple weeks ago I made myself a camera case. I had some leftover leather from a segment I developed for Martha and was so in love with its fleshy pinkish color that I needed a permanent place for it in my everyday life—protection for my camera was the perfect solution for its use.

I layered a strip of leather with a thin piece of cotton batting and a patterned piece of cotton fabric for the liner. The batting adds a bit more padding to help protect my only treasured electronic and the fun patterned liner adds a sweet surprise when my camera is removed.

I folded the layers of fabric inside-out and sewed up the side on the sewing machine to create a snug pocket for my camera when flipped right-side out. I left a little bit of excess leather where the opening would be. Originally, I cut the fabric planning for a flap, but wasn't feeling it once it was stitched up. I trimmed the flap off but left about a half inch of leather on the end, like I did on the other top edge. I folded the top leather edges over and with white glue, glued them down, covering the ends of the cotton batting and fabric to make the exposed top edges clean.

So far, so good. It protects and is super easy to remove the camera so I don't miss those crucial photographic moments. I love how the leather has molded around the lens too!

  1. Very nice, and I love that leather color too. I had made a case for my camera out of a piece of felted wool I had laying around. Seemed like a good idea, but then, hellooooo...wool fuzz in the lens. This seems to be a much better alternative.

  2. Disgusted by killing animals, but fine making crafts out of their skin?

  3. no not fine with it.
I use scraps of leather that might otherwise be thrown out. I have to work with a lot of materials I don't want to for my job. I would absolutely draw the line with fur. How do you think it makes me feel to use feathers? Believe me I feel very guilty about it when I go to sleep.
And I am not disgusted by killing animals, I am disgusted by factory farming and the treatment of animals for mass production. Believe me, I can keep going.

  4. Leather is just skin without the fur on it. It's the same thing. That line you drew seems pretty arbitrary.
I found you awhile ago through a comment you left on a blog about hunting and eating a deer, saying that the thought of killing an animal made you physically sick. Not trying to be rude or start a fight or anything, I guess I'm just curious about your stance.

  5. oh yes I remember the post.
I could not, would not hunt and do feel physically sick at the thought of killing an animal.
Yes leather is skin without fur but it not quite the same thing. Leather can be a byproduct of the meat industry. Fur animals are farmed just for their coats and the rest discarded.
    Listen, it's all bad!
I wear leather shoes also because those vegan leather ones are just as bad for the environment. I save leather scraps and recycle leftovers from other projects that I have to do at work and use them to make other things... why am I justifying myself?!
If you think I am arbitrary don't read my blog, but I do live a pretty green life and am completely aware of my actions when they are harmful.
    What makes you so curious?

  6. dear anonymous
I am sorry about my ranting. I haven't been able to get your comment off my mind all day—which means I am probably guilty. you are right. It is wrong for me to use leather with the way I feel about animal rights and all. There is no justifiable reason for me to use it except that I think skin is the most amazing material.
thank you anonymous for making this clear.
I will always think of you when I touch leather.

  7. Like I said, I wasn't trying to start a fight or be disrespectful. I read your blog because I like what you do, but considering how I found it, I'm just always curious about your stance on it all when you post things made of leather. Re-reading my comment I know I sounded judgemental, but I was honestly just genuinely curious. Everyone has their own views and reasons for having those views, and as long as you can justify them for yourself, you don't need to justify them to me or anyone else.
